Resident Artist Programs

Resident Quilt Artist - Alice Wiley

Resident Musician/Historian - Terry McKinney

RAC focused on heritage in 2006/07 in our school art residencies.

Quilter Alice Wiley, musician/historian Terry McKinney, Native American storyteller Jacque Redleaf, and Appalachian storyteller Arlene Broyles worked in our schools providing a vast array of experiences and hands-on activities on heritage. Together the artists will have taught 27 weeks of their craft in Mitchell and Yancey County schools.

Artists meet with students in a hands-on activity for 5 contact hours a week. In addition to the residencies, TRAC also sponsored a teacher training workshop that focused on using "heritage" in the classroom.

In January and February, two special education exhibits featuring student artwork were displayed at the TRAC Galleries.

The residency program is made possible in part by an Arts in Education Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and our local Mitchell County and Yancey County Boards of Education.
