SUMMARY:Sphere of Influence
DESCRIPTION:SPHERE OF INFLUENCE\nGlass Artists of Western North Carolina\nRECEPTION: JULY 28\, 5 TO 7PM \nExhibit continues Wednesday\, August 1 through Friday\, August 25 from 11 to 4pm. \n  \nThe roots of the contemporary glass art movement run deep in Western North Carolina. This developing story of glass artists has created a rich history and culture of art\, education\, mentorship\, and commerce.  The “Sphere of Influence” exhibit invites you to follow the international careers of 61 of these accomplished artists. Together they have stimulated a “pass it on” mentality sharing their work through exhibitions and teacher-student or mentor-apprentice in an intergenerational community. \nMany of the artists highlighted here were early pioneers in the Studio Glass Movement\, initiated in the early 60’s by the influence of Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino.  These artists’ careers span over 56 years and now include four generations. Like their predecessors\, each new generation has been promoted and encouraged to build their livelihoods investigating glass properties\, experimenting with form\, temperature\, and gravity.  This exhibit offers the opportunity to view their contemporary glass artwork\, ranging from vessels and sculptures to jewelry and ornaments\, created using multiple blowing\, sculpting\, casting\, fusing\, etching and flameworking techniques.    \n

SUMMARY:CYNTHIA LAWING PIANO RECITAL
DESCRIPTION:CYNTHIA LAWING TO PERFORM IN BURNSVILLE\nCynthia Lawing came to Burnsville via Davidson College\, north of Charlotte\, where she was a member of the Applied Music faculty. It was serendipity that she came into the Toe River Arts Gallery and met executive director\, Denise Cook. Conversation turned to music and she discovered that the great Hungarian pianist Lili Kraus was once a resident near Burnsville on a 700-acre farm.  Madame Kraus had delighted residents by presenting piano recitals\, always to packed house.  She selected a Steinway Concert Grand which is currently housed in First Presbyterian Church in Burnsville. \nLawing has performed throughout the United States\, in Asia\, Europe and South America. In honor of the distinguished world renowned pianist\, she will be offering a piano recital in the same church on Saturday\, July 21 at 7 PM.  The program will include selections from the repertoire frequently presented by Madame Kraus herself\, which will include works by Mozart\, Chopin\, Brahms\, Schubert and Bartok. \nThe recital is free and the public is welcome. The First Presbyterian Church is located at 120 Church Street off West Main in Burnsville.
