SUMMARY:Toe River Arts Chamber Ensemble Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Toe River Chamber Ensemble invites the public to their Annual Spring Concert. \nThe concert is as diverse as this spring’s weather. From well-loved “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa to selections from the Star Wars cinematic block-busters\, the Toe River Chamber Ensemble will offer a challenging program featuring several full orchestra selections including\, “Danse Macabre” composed by Camille Saint-Saens in 1874. The original\, known as a “tone poem” because it evokes the content of a poem or other non-musical source\, was not well received due to its innovative sounds\, but today\, audiences applaud the almost dark tones that fill the background in many current films. \nThen it’s a change of pace when the Yancey County Middle School Jazz Band comes into the orchestra pit and joins in on “The Star Spangled Banner.” Writing in 1814\, poet Frances Scott Key was inspired by the large American flag and its 15 stars and 15 stripes flying triumphantly above Fort McHenry during a victory in the War of 1812. However\, it took over 100 years to be recognized as the national anthem. \nLed by Music Director at East Yancey and Cane River Middle Schools\, Christine English\, the Jazz Band continues solo with several renditions of their own favorites.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP : Making the Leap from Fact to Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Writer Cynthia Reeves is the 2018 “Art of the Climate” resident at Art + Science In the Field: AS IF Center. Her current writing project is a trilogy of linked novellas entitled The Comfort of Water. All three are set on the Svalbard archipelago\, where in June 2017 she shared the Arctic Circle Summer Solstice expedition with 31 other artists.  \n10:00am-2:30pm with a break for lunch\n(try Fox & the Fig or DTs Blue Ridge Java) \nThis workshop will focus on finding inspiration for creative writing in “fact” and incorporating research into fiction.  We will address questions such as: How do you write authentically about subjects with which you might be only tangentially familiar? Why do certain subjects–climate change and historical events\, for example–intrigue you? How can that fascination be put to use in your writing? \nPreparation for the workshop will include completing several reading assignments totalling approximately eight hours. The workshop will consist of an informal lecture as well as a writing exercise that will be completed in class and shared with other participants. Due to time constraints\, there will not be an opportunity for Cynthia to read the work of participants beforehand.   \nMinimum 8 participants / Maximum 12\nWorkshop registration closes March 10\nTo apply\, write a brief (250-300 word) essay about why you are interested in the workshop\, and email by March 10 to AS IF Center Director Nancy Lowe.

SUMMARY:Toe River Arts December Studio Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Toe River Arts Holiday Studio Tour happens each December in Mitchell and Yancey Counties. This second of two premier events held each year the first weekend in December will feature over 80 open studios and galleries.  On the evening of the first day of the tour (December 1) from 5:30 to 7:30pm\, TRAC hosts a reception at the Spruce Pine Gallery where visitors and artists get together to shake hands\, tell a story or two\, share a glass of wine; and where those “taking” the tour can plan the rest of their weekend. The tour is self-guided and free. Hours are 10am to 5pm each day—Friday-Sunday. Just pick up a guide at either TRAC location or at retailers and studios throughout the region (Available mid-October) and follow the Toe River Arts tour signs. Her show Conversions will mark the end of the year at the Toe River Arts Burnsville Gallery with an expressive display of determination\, and talent.  Webb is a sculptor and two-dimensional and digital artist. Her work draws you in\, causes you to think\, ask a question. Yet\, at the same time\, her images engage your eyes with the beauty of detail. \n“My work is evolutionary. It represents my personal transition to freedom from the stifling existence of the female role in my family of origin. The work reflects my journey from a childhood of fear- and shamed-based religious fundamentalism to the freedom of my own hard-won spirituality. DESCRIPTION:This bi-annual holiday exhibit features the artwork of the 2017 Toe River Studio Tour Participants. Arranged geographically\, the work is displayed to make it easy to navigate from studio to studio in this two-county event. With guide and pencil in hand\, visitors can choose their route for the tour weekend or purchase a piece of art they just can’t wait to have. \nBoth internationally known and emerging artists in every medium have settled into what has become one of the finest communities of both traditional and contemporary craft artists in the country. Twice a year\, these artists open their studios and invite the public to spend a few minutes to get to know them\, to view their work\, to learn how they went from idea to something the visitor can hold. This year’s tour participating artists and galleries have a sampling of pieces that are available in their studio on display at the Spruce Pine Gallery. \nA gala reception is held the first Friday of the Studio Tour\, December 1\, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Spruce Pine TRAC Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public to view the work\, meet the artists\, and share a bite and toast the end of another year of open studio tours in Mitchell and Yancey Counties.
