SUMMARY:Conversions
DESCRIPTION:Mary Ruth Webb is an artist. Her show Conversions will mark the end of the year at the Toe River Arts Burnsville Gallery with an expressive display of determination\, and talent.  Webb is a sculptor and two-dimensional and digital artist. Her work draws you in\, causes you to think\, ask a question. Yet\, at the same time\, her images engage your eyes with the beauty of detail. \n“My work is evolutionary. It represents my personal transition to freedom from the stifling existence of the female role in my family of origin. The work reflects my journey from a childhood of fear- and shamed-based religious fundamentalism to the freedom of my own hard-won spirituality. The exhibit reflects my belief that one cannot find inner peace as the result of influences from others and that it cannot be genuine if it comes from someone else’s belief system.  \n“Conversions expresses both the subject matter and the working modes involved in creating my sculptures…from drawings\, both traditional and digital\, to the ceramic pieces\, and vice-versa.”  \nRECEPTION FRIDAY\, DECEMBER 15\, FROM 5 TO 7PM \n

SUMMARY:Holiday Studio Tour Participant Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This bi-annual holiday exhibit features the artwork of the 2017 Toe River Studio Tour Participants. Arranged geographically\, the work is displayed to make it easy to navigate from studio to studio in this two-county event. With guide and pencil in hand\, visitors can choose their route for the tour weekend or purchase a piece of art they just can’t wait to have. \nBoth internationally known and emerging artists in every medium have settled into what has become one of the finest communities of both traditional and contemporary craft artists in the country. Twice a year\, these artists open their studios and invite the public to spend a few minutes to get to know them\, to view their work\, to learn how they went from idea to something the visitor can hold. This year’s tour participating artists and galleries have a sampling of pieces that are available in their studio on display at the Spruce Pine Gallery. \nA gala reception is held the first Friday of the Studio Tour\, December 1\, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Spruce Pine TRAC Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public to view the work\, meet the artists\, and share a bite and toast the end of another year of open studio tours in Mitchell and Yancey Counties.

SUMMARY:The Mouse Trap
DESCRIPTION:A quintessential murder mystery play by Agatha Christie. A group of strangers is stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm\, one of whom is a murderer. The suspects include the newly married couple who run the house\, and the suspicions in their minds nearly wreck their perfect marriage. Others are a spinster with a curious background\, an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef\, a retired Army major\, a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift\, and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. Into their midst comes a policeman\, traveling on skis. He no sooner arrives\, when the jurist is killed. Two down\, and one to go. To get to the rationale of the murderer’s pattern\, the policeman probes the background of everyone present\, and rattles a lot of skeletons. Another famous Agatha Christie switch finish! Chalk up another superb intrigue for the foremost mystery writer of her time. \nPlease visit the website for ticket information\, pricing\, and purchase.

SUMMARY:Toe River Valley - Spruce Pine
DESCRIPTION:It’s about place. It’s about the destination. It’s about the art we find when we arrive. \nRoan Mountain range marking the northern point\, its windswept\, forested paths crossing over the Appalachian Trail to the ridge. Mt. Mitchell marking the south\, the highest point this side of the Mississippi River with centuries of awe-inspiring views. Meandering between and predating these 400 million plus-year old peaks is the Toe River\, one of the oldest rivers in the world. And along that river\, along its many tributaries\, live the artists who chose to make this place their homes\, to value the land on which they create\, to protect the waterways that flow beside. \nThe Toe River Arts Council host two community wide exhibitions\, “Toe River Valley \,” which will run through September 23\, 2017. These concordant shows showcases interpretive photography by Doug Sudduth and paintings from Blue Ridge Fine Arts Guild artists\, documenting life along the river in pencil\, paint and camera—a watershed of arctic blues and greens\, rusts\, clouds of snow along the banks—seemingly endless\, ever moving\, meandering\, cutting through the land like a warm knife through butter. Noted geologist Alex Glover speaks at both galleries (time and date to be announced). Kids can paint rocks as they learn about the fragility of our ecosystem. A special feature is Hellbender Rocky who will slither out of the mud to watch a drones-eye-view of the Valley during a reception on August 25. \nThe Toe River is what makes our community so precious\, so necessary to preserve. This exhibition highlights the river\, the creeks and valleys\, a tangible appreciation for and the guardianship of our watershed by highlighting the art of its artists. \nReception in Spruce Pine is scheduled for Friday\, August 25 from 5 to 7pm. \nImage by Susan Garriques
