RECEPTION: JULY 28, 5 TO 7PM
Exhibit continues Wednesday, August 1 through Friday, August 25 from 11 to 4pm.
The roots of the contemporary glass art movement run deep in Western North Carolina. This developing story of glass artists has created a rich history and culture of art, education, mentorship, and commerce. The “Sphere of Influence†exhibit invites you to follow the international careers of 61 of these accomplished artists. Together they have stimulated a “pass it on†mentality sharing their work through exhibitions and teacher-student or mentor-apprentice in an intergenerational community.
Many of the artists highlighted here were early pioneers in the Studio Glass Movement, initiated in the early 60’s by the influence of Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino. These artists’ careers span over 56 years and now include four generations. Like their predecessors, each new generation has been promoted and encouraged to build their livelihoods investigating glass properties, experimenting with form, temperature, and gravity. This exhibit offers the opportunity to view their contemporary glass artwork, ranging from vessels and sculptures to jewelry and ornaments, created using multiple blowing, sculpting, casting, fusing, etching and flameworking techniques. Â
