Bringle: A Tale of Two Makers Documentary
This legacy project facilitated by Toe River Arts highlights the Bringle sisters’ personal history, their artistic contributions to the field of craft, their significance as educators and mentors, their local and national community relationships, and the role they have played in the life of Penland School of Craft and the Toe River region. Cynthia Bringle and Edwina Bringle have led storied lives as craftspeople in the South, producing remarkable works of art, mentoring a vast community of makers, and sharing what they know with students, visitors and collectors at every turn. They have been anchors in the studio craft movement from the mid-1960s to the present and enabled others to carry those traditions forward. It is this story that Toe River Arts wishes to tell in a documentary video to be made available to film festivals, arts organizations, schools, libraries, and through the internet. Ultimately, the video will be archived with the Western Regional Archives of the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the American Craft Council.
