Giving oneself the opportunity to work outside of usual constraints unlocks access to a deeper expression of the psyche.

In conversation one day Alena and Stephanie, longtime kindred creative spirits, discovered they had embarked on a similar adventure in their studio practices that was exploring this very idea.

Alena wanted to break out of norms and do something different. What began as playful creating with discarded materials, in this case, steel swarf, became a way to let go of ties to purposeful form. She was exploring abstract forms instead of staying within the constraints of specific roles.

Stephanie’s lifelong practice of journaling had become stale. She had traded words for forms and shapes instead to explore her inner self. She let her pencil flow freely with lines that held emotional information and then developed them into forms that had depth and color.

We felt that our new adventures were loosening our grip on our creative practice, allowing new energies to bloom. We were each producing a similar aesthetic of spirals and lines that curved and twisted around themselves. We recognized that something mysterious was happening that we wanted to engage with in a more intentional way.

Our exhibit consists of drawings and sculptures that we create in conversation with each other and that intersect with our inner life. In addition, we offer our audience an opportunity to join us on the journey of surrendering expectations through an interactive undertaking of their own. Participants are invited to hang their own creations, crafted within the space, with the exhibit.
